How to Remove a Fake-Alert Virus

A fake-alert virus is one that generates warning screens that look like they were created by the computer's own defenses. Often, these fake-alerts are scams intended to frighten users into clicking links on the pop-ups to fix the problem. These links often lead to websites that urge users to purchase an expensive product in order to fix the problem. Don't be fooled: buying this product is likely to make the problem worse. Alternate methods are needed to remove the threat.


Instructions

Make a note of any names mentioned in the fake spyware windows such as "Spywarebot" to give an example. Write down this name.

Click on the "Start" menu button in the bottom left corner of the screen. Click on "Control Panel."

Double-click on "Add/Remove Programs." Search for the name you wrote down on the list, and click the "Remove" button to remove the program.

Use an anti-virus tool, such as McAfee or Norton, to scan for and remove the fake-alert virus. You may also download an anti-spyware tool, as spyware and virus tools often go after the same types of programs. An example of an anti-spyware tool is "Spybot:Search and Destroy."

Install Spybot or a similar program by clicking twice on the icon. Click on "Updates" and then click on the "Downloads" button to get the most recent version designed to fight fake-alert virus/spyware threats.

Click on "Check for Problems" to scan your computer. Scan the list for the fake-alert virus. Click "Fix selected Problems."

Never click on a link to a virus removal tool that appears on your screen at random.
